Phoenix Suns Fire Head Coach Alvin Gentry

Suns can head coach Alvin Gentry as they sit in last place.

HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: If the Suns think this is going to help improve their team they’re crazy. Get used to losing Phoenix.

Gentry knew success early in his career with the Suns, but his teams have been struggling as of late. In his first season behind the up-tempo game of Steve Nash and Amar’e Stoudemire Phoenix went 54-28 and made it to the Western Conference Finals.

After Amar’e Stoudemire and Steve Nash left the Suns have struggled to find consistent offensive production. They currently sit in last place in the West and have struggled the last couple of years.

“Alvin Gentry is a good coach and a good person,” Suns vice president of basketball operations Lon Babby said from the US Airways Center. “He was the perfect coach for our previous group. But with the current group, all of us, including Alvin himself, realized that it just wasn’t working, the pieces just weren’t fitting.”

Sounds like kind words with a kick out the door. Overall Gentry went 158-144 over his five year span with the Suns.

“It wasn’t that we weren’t winning enough games so much as a feel that we weren’t progressing, that we were regressing,” Babby said. “We can’t have that. We’ve got to have our closure moving forward. We didn’t feel like we were moving forward and I don’t think Alvin felt like we were moving forward.”

The Suns are expected to name their interim coach in the next 48 hours.
