March Madness Goes Bonkers As Wichita St and Syracuse March To Final Four.
Wichita St. Tops Ohio and Syracuse Beats Marquette to advance to the Final Four.
HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: It’s not NBA basketball, but what basketball fan doesn’t love March? This is amazing stuff.
Someone forgot to tell Wichita St. (26-8) that they were only a #9 seed. They shocked the nation beating the #1 seed Gonzaga earlier in the week and now put the NCAA on notice as they dismantled the #2 seed Ohio State. The final score of the game 70-66 doesn’t truly tell the story of how dominant Wichita St. was throughout the game. At one point, they lead by as much as 20-points. Wichita St. made the #2 seed Ohio State look like they didn’t belong and when it was all said-and-done, they didn’t. Wichita outside sharp-shooting was lethal. The question is if they got 2 more games left in them.
Syracuse isn’t quite the Cinderella Story of Florida Gulf Coast or even Wichita St., but Syracuse has still advanced far deeper than most predicted coming into the tournament a #4 seed. Most had them losing to either UNLV in the round of 32 or definitely to Indiana in the Sweet 16, but Syracuse proves once again what a tenacious 2-3 zone defense can accomplish. They held Marquette to only 39 points. Yeah, that’s 39 points for the entire game. You’ve got to love Syracuse’s defense first mentality and their ability to both force you to take jump-shots and force turnovers.
The two final pieces to the Final Four will be determined today when Louisville goes against Duke to determine the Midwest champion and Florida goes against Michigan to crown the South.
One thing is already certain; this has been an amazing March Madness. It marks the first time a #15 seed has ever advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, when Florida Golf Coast shocked Georgetown the #2 seed in the first round and San Diego St. the #7 seed before eventually getting knocked out by Florida.
