Durant concedes scoring title through Instagram
If you thought Kevin Durant was cool before, you’re probably going to think he’s even cooler now.
Hoopsvibe’s quick call: The Durantula announced he was conceding the NBA scoring title to Carmelo Anthony via his Instagram account.
Durant and Anthony were neck and neck all season for the NBA scoring title, but Carmelo Anthony’s 36.9 points per game average since April 1st allowed him to pull away from the OKC star in the end.
Melo announced Tuesday that he would sit out the Knicks regular season finale, which meant that Durant would have had to put up 70 points to surpass Anthony in the end. (Anthony is averaging 28.7 points while Durant is averaging 28.1 per game on the season).
But Durant didn’t even get that chance, as he sat out the Thunder’s final game against the Bucks Wednesday night.
Durant posted a photo of a note to his instagram account that read, “SITTING OUT TONIGHT’S GAME, if you disappointed I didn’t try to go for the scoring title, oh well!!”
(BTW … Kevin Durant’s Instagram name is sniperjones35 and his tag line is “The best dreams that I have is when I’m wide awake” – How effing cool is this guy???!!!)
Anyway, even Thunder coach Scott Brooks put the scoring title issue to bed. It was probably his idea to rest his star player in the first place.
“He has no shot,” Coach Brooks said. “I gurantee you he won’t get it.”
But even though Durant isn’t this year’s NBA scoring champion, he still put up one of the best seasons by any player in NBA history. In the 2012-2013 regular season, the dude put up numbers. He became the 6th player in NBA history to join the 50-40-90 club, meaning he averaged 50% shooting from the field, 40% from the three-point line, and 90% from the free-throw line over the course of a season. It is one of the most exclusive scoring clubs in all of sports.
So KD didn’t get the scoring title, but he had a hell of a season. One that will go down in history.
And a big hoopsvibe.com congratulations to Melo on being this year’s scoring champ!
