Greg Oden Signs With Miami Heat
Greg Oden has "taken his talents to South Beach."
HoopsVibe Very Quick Call: The old adage goes that “you can’t teach height” and seven footers with the skill and athleticism of Greg Oden will always be attractive to NBA squads.
The biggest knock against the Miami Heat during their championship run has been a lack of depth amongst the big men. For as much as it's been talked about for the last couple years, there was rarely an on-court example to point to. Until the Eastern Conference Finals against the Pacers this year, when the Heat were nearly exposed.
With that in mind, the signing of former 2007 first overall pick Greg Oden was announced today and makes a lot of sense. Oden signed a two-year deal for the veteran minimum with a player option in year two.
Per ESPN, Oden said it was a "big deciding factor" that Heat officials made it clear to him that he "wouldn't be needed as much early in the season."
"When I had a conversation with Coach (Erik) Spoelstra and hearing how much he knew about the training stuff that I was already doing, it kind of made me feel like they know what's best for me," Oden said in a phone interview.
"I'm not going to sit here and say I'm 100 percent," Oden added. "I am moving (well) and I am feeling good, but I have a lot of work to do."
It’s amazing to think that Oden is just 25. Equally amazing, is that he has played just a total of 82 games in his NBA career. In those 82 games, he has averaged 9.4 ppg, 7.3 rpg and 1.4 bpg in just 22.1 mpg. Extrapolate those numbers out over significant minutes, over an entire season, and you potentially have the best center in the game.
A low pressure environment like Miami seems to be the perfect place for Oden to revitalize his career.
