(Sports Network) – The Minnesota Timberwolves lost Tuesday to Seattle,
89-87, when Ronald Murray’s fade-away jumper at the buzzer gave the
SuperSonics the victory at the Target Center.
Kevin Garnett paced Minnesota with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Latrell Sprewell
netted 20 points and Sam Cassell contributed 15 points and 13 assists for the
Timberwolves, who had a two-game winning streak halted.
Cassell’s basket with 5:25 left in the fourth quarter gave Minnesota an 80-72
Seattle then stormed back and took the lead at 83-82 on a dunk by Jerome James
with 1:55 remaining.
On the Timberwolves’ next possession, Garnett was fouled, but missed both free
The Sonics then turned the ball over and Minnesota again had a chance to take
the lead. However, Cassell misfired on a baseline jumper.
James was fouled with 36 seconds left and sank both attempts from the stripe
to make it 85-82.
Mark Madsen answered with a dunk for Minnesota and the Timberwolves then
fouled Murray, who made both free throws for an 87-84 edge.
After Sprewell tied the game with a three-pointer with 14.5 seconds remaining,
Murray drove to the left side of the basket and hit the tough 10-foot jumper
over Sprewell to give Seattle the win.
The Timberwolves are off until Thursday when they host the Chicago Bulls.
