(Sports Network) – The Houston Rockets were defeated Thursday by the Dallas
Mavericks, 97-86, at American Airlines Center.

Jim Jackson ended with 23 points to pace the Rockets, who had their four-game
winning streak snapped. Steve Francis had 15 points and seven assists in the
losing effort.

Kelvin Cato had 12 points and nine rebounds, while Yao Ming scored 12 points
and had eight boards for the Rockets.

Houston was trying to begin a season 6-1 for the first time since 1996 when
the club started 15-1.

Dallas led 69-63 midway through the third period and then used a 10-0 run,
highlighted by six points from Steve Nash, to seize a commanding 79-63 edge.
The Rockets cut into the deficit and trailed 81-71 after three quarters.

The Mavericks quickly stretched the gap to 88-73 on two Dirk Nowitzki free
throws with 9:24 left in the game and Houston never threatened again. Dallas
led by as many as 18 points in the final frame.

The Rockets host Shawn Marion and the Phoenix Suns tonight.
