(Sports Network) – Paul Pierce poured in 33 points and added 10 assists, as
the Boston Celtics held on to defeat the Denver Nuggets, 116-111, Sunday at
the Pepsi Center.

Eric Williams netted 21 points and Jiri Welsch chipped in a career-high 19 for
Boston, which halted a four-game losing streak. Mike James had 13 points for
the Celtics.

Carmelo Anthony’s three-point play with 7:41 remaining in the fourth quarter
tied the contest at 94-94. The Nuggets had trailed by as many as 16 points in
the first half.

The Celtics then countered with an 11-2 spurt, capped by James’ three-pointer,
to grab a 105-96 lead with 5:09 left.

Denver battled back and cut the deficit to 113-111 on Rodney White’s three-
pointer with 28 seconds remaining.

The Nuggets then fouled James, who proceeded to make both free throws for a
115-111 advantage.

On Denver’s next possession, Anthony and White missed close-in jumpers, before
Pierce finally got the rebound for the Celtics. He was fouled with 8.2 seconds
left and hit 1-of-2 from the line to account for the final margin.
