(Sports Network) – The Sacramento Kings failed in their attempt for a sixth
consecutive victory on Tuesday with a 109-104 loss to the Portland Trail
Blazers at ARCO Arena.
Peja Stojakovic poured in a game-high 34 points for Sacramento, which overcame
a 10-point deficit with less than a minute to play in regulation. Bobby
Jackson added 29 points and 10 rebounds for the Kings.
The Kings pulled within 93-92 on Jackson’s free throws with 7.5 ticks left on
the clock, but Wallace made it a three-point game again on the foul line at
the other end.
It looked like the game was over, but Jackson was fouled on a three-point
attempt and made 2-of-3 to get the Kings within one again. Derek Anderson was
fouled after that and made both attempts, but Brad Miller calmly drained a
three from the top of the arc to tie the game at 97-97 and send it into
But Anderson took over from there, single handedly winning the game for
Portland in overtime. Sacramento got the lead early, but Anderson tied it at
99-99 on a jumper with 4:30 remaining in the extra period.
His three-pointer just over two minutes later then gave the Blazers a 102-101
advantage. The teams went back and forth after that, but it was Anderson who
gave Portland the lead for good with a free throw to make it 105-104, and two
free throws after a steal to make it a 107-104 game.
Sacramento, which fell to 6-2 in Tuesday games this season, now leads the Los
Angeles Lakers by 3 1/2 games in the Pacific Division.
The Kings, who will start a six-game road trip on Thursday against the
Cleveland Cavaliers, fell for the first time in seven tries and for only the
second time in their last 13 at ARCO, but still remain the NBA’s best team at
home with a 21-3 mark in their arena this season.
