(Sports Network) – Chauncey Billups made two free throws with less than one
second left to lift Detroit to an 80-78 win over Memphis on Saturday at The
Palace of Auburn Hills.
Richard Hamilton scored 20 points and Corliss Williamson added 13 for the
Pistons, who have won three straight games. Ben Wallace hauled in a game-high
13 rebounds and Billups scored nine points in the win.
Detroit was up five after three quarters, but extended the cushion to 69-58 on
Williamson’s basket with just under eight minutes left. The lead reached 12
points later in the frame and the Pistons held a 78-67 advantage with around
three minutes left.
However, Memphis used an 11-0 surge to tie the game.
Bonzi Wells began the run with a basket and that was followed by consecutive
jumpers from Gasol and Earl Watson. Pau Gasol then had another field goal and
his three- point play capped the burst with 53 seconds left.
Each team then missed and Detroit took over with 6.4 seconds left. Tayshaun
Prince inbounded the ball to Billups in the corner. Billups attempted a
turnaround jumper that was blocked by Gasol, but Watson was called for a reach
in foul with 4/10ths of a second remaining.
Billups drained both free throws to give Detroit the dramatic win.
The Pistons are off until Monday when they visit the Miami Heat.
