Minnesota Timberwolves Team Report – February 23

=== Minnesota Timberwolves Team Report – February 23 ===

(Sports Network) – The Minnesota Timberwolves were defeated by the San
Antonio Spurs, 94-92, at the Target Center.

Minnesota was led by Kevin Garnett’s 28 points and 10 rebounds — his 50th
double-double of the season. He also handed out seven assists for the
Timberwolves, who had a five-game winning streak snapped.

Sam Cassell added 24 points in a losing effort and, along with Latrell
Sprewell, was unable to find room for a last-second shot attempt to tie the
game.

The Timberwolves trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half and 11 in
the third quarter, but cut their deficit to 70-64 heading into the fourth.

They later closed within three points at 84-81 when Garnett capped a 7-1
spurt, but San Antonio responded with two quick buckets and went ahead 88-81
on Tim Duncan’s rebound dunk with 3:00 remaining.

Three free throws from Sprewell with 19.2 seconds remaining re-kindled the
Timberwolves’ comeback hopes and pulled them within 90-88, but the game came
down to free throws for the Spurs, and they made 4-of-6 to provide just enough
room.

Minnesota had one last good chance with six ticks left on the clock after a
Manu Ginobili miss at the line, but Cassell was well guarded bringing the ball
up the court and Sprewell hesitated beyond the arc at the buzzer.

A record Target Center crowd of 20,347 was on hand, besting the old mark of
20,320 set in January 2002 when Michael Jordan and the Washington Wizards
visited.

The Timberwolves are off until Tuesday when they visit All-star Michael Redd
and the Milwaukee Bucks.
