(Sports Network) – The Minnesota Timberwolves fell to Midwest Division rival
Houston, 112-109, on Friday at the Target Center.
Kevin Garnett had game highs with 32 points and 18 rebounds for the
Timberwolves, who lost for only the third time in their last 12 games. Sam
Cassell chipped in 25 points and handed out 13 assists in the setback.
Minnesota connected on 43-of-78 shot attempts (55 percent) and 18-of-26 from
the charity stripe (69 percent).
Minnesota led by five points after three quarters, but Cuttino Mobley’s basket
just over one minute into the final frame tied the score at 90-90. The
Timberwolves led 96-94 moments later, but the Rockets then used a 7-0 spurt to
claim a 101-96 edge. During the surge, Steve Francis scored five points,
including knocking down a three-pointer to cap the run.
Latrell Sprewell’s jump shot with 3:40 left in the game brought Minnesota
within 104-102, but four straight Rockets points gave them a 108-102 lead with
2:03 remaining. Garnett then countered with a three-point play and Sprewell
drained two free throws to bring the T-Wolves within 108-107 with 1 1/2
Clarence Weatherspoon, though, hit a jumper to extend the lead back to three
points. After a series of misses, Weatherspoon was fouled and he hit both free
throws to stretch the gap to 112-107 with 44.4 seconds left.
Garnett then nailed a field goal with just under 40 seconds left and after
Mobley missed a long three-point attempt, Minnesota took over down three with
12 seconds remaining. Troy Hudson missed a chance to tie as his long three-
pointer clanked off the back rim. Adrian Griffin grabbed the rebound and was
fouled, but he missed both shots and Garnett grabbed the rebound with 3.1

the Boston Celtics. Earlier this season, the Timberwolves defeated Boston,
116-95, at the FleetCenter.
Garnett has averaged 24.2 points and 14.7 rebounds in his last 10 games. He
has scored in double digits in all 62 of Minnesota’s games this season.
