McGrady to miss Olympics; O’Neal next?
Athens, Greece (Sports Network) – Tracy McGrady will not suit up for the U.S.
men’s Olympic basketball team at the Athens Games. U.S. head coach Larry Brown
made the announcement.
McGrady joins an elite list of players who have withdrawn from the team or
have stated to the selection committee they would decline an invitation.
McGrady, along with Ray Allen, Jason Kidd, Karl Malone, Kevin Garnett, Vince
Carter, Elton Brand and Kenyon Martin have all decided to stay home and not
travel to Greece.
The question now is how will the U.S. be successful without one of its
best all-around offensive talents and primary defenders? Brown indicated that
McGrady’s decision to get married influenced his final decision.
Jermaine O’Neal might be the next player to drop out, as he is also wavering
whether to play in the summer games. O’Neal did not comment when asked about
his choice to play or not, stating that he is only thinking about the NBA
playoffs right now.
Ironically, O’Neal’s Indiana Pacers are playing against coach Brown of the
Detroit Pistons. The winner of the best-of-seven series will represent the
Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals.
