Yao has ligament damage in elbow

Houston, TX (Sports Network) – Houston Rockets center Yao Ming has a partial
tear of a ligament in his left elbow.

Yao was diagnosed with a hyperextended elbow until an MRI revealed the
magnitude of the injury. His status for the season opener on November 2
versus defending champion Detroit is in doubt.

The 24-year-old All-Star was kept out of Houston’s final preseason game
against the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night. Yao injured the elbow versus the
San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night when he got tangled up under the basket.

He averaged 17.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in 82 games last season.
