(Sports Network) – Yao Ming totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds while Juwan
Howard posted 20 points, as the Houston Rockets edged the Memphis Grizzlies,
90-87, on Tuesday at the Toyota Center.
Tracy McGrady had 12 points, seven assists and six boards for Houston, but
left in the fourth quarter with a hip strain. Maurice Taylor added 12 points
in the victory.
The teams battled closely throughout until Houston finally took control with
over six minutes to play in the final frame.
Howard put home a layup with 6:28 left that put the Rockets in front for good
Yao then threw down a dunk with over four minutes remaining as Houston moved
ahead 85-78. Nearly two minutes later, however, Stromile Swift’s floater and
ensuing foul shot brought Memphis within 87-83.
Yao then answered with a fadeaway jumper to make it 89-83, but two more free
throws by Swift cut the deficit to four. Another foul shot by Swift made it
89-86 with 25 seconds left, but his first miss of the night from the stripe
prevented it from being a two-point game.
Rockets guard Tyronn Lue went the other way, but missed a running layup. The
Grizzlies gained control of the rebound and called timeout with five seconds
The Rockets fouled as soon as the ball came in bounds, but Memphis missed the
first foul shot to basically end it. Houston also made just 1-of-2 foul shots
to give the Grizzlies one final chance. However, Memphis could not convert a
long range attempt from half court as time expired.
After losing three out of four against the Memphis last season, the Rockets
have posted victories in consecutive games against the Grizzlies.
