(Sports Network) – Paul Pierce scored a team-high 23 points and Mark Blount
added 16 points with 16 rebounds as Boston hung on to beat Milwaukee, 101-100,
at the FleetCenter.

Raef LaFrentz chipped in with 14 points and Ricky Davis came off the bench to
contribute 12 for the Celtics, who have won two straight after a four-game
slide. Gary Payton, honored before the game for reaching the 20,000 point
plateau, collected 10 points with six assists in the win.

In a back-and-forth fourth quarter, Milwaukee evened up the contest at 90 on
Michael Redd’s inside jumper with under six minutes remaining. The Celtics,
though, came right back moments later to take the lead for good. Welsch’s two
free throws followed by a Pierce trey gave the Celtics a 97-93 lead with under
three minutes left.

The pesky Bucks appeared to tie the game at 100 on Maurice Williams’ off-
balanced shot with three seconds to go. However, Williams was called for an
offensive foul as he tried to clear out a defender while attempting the shot.

After Pierce drained 1-of-2 from the line to make it 101-98 with 2.3 ticks
left, Keith Van Horn scored on a quick layup with less than a second to play.
Boston easily got the inbound pass in and time expired.

Prior to Wednesday’s game, the Celtics honored G Gary Payton with a
commemorative ball for scoring his 20,000th career point in a Celtics uniform.
Payton is the 29th player to reach 20,000 points and fourth as a Celtic. One
of the others, the legendary John Havlicek, presented Payton with the ball.

Pierce has scored 20 or more points in 10 of Boston’s 14 games this season and
leads the team in scoring (22.7 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg).

Boston will return to action on Friday versus the Toronto Raptors.
