(Sports Network) – Shaquille O’Neal scored 40 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and
blocked five shots to lead the Miami Heat to a 106-83 win over the Washington
Wizards at AmericanAirlines Arena on Monday.
O’Neal, who sparked a 26-9 fourth-quarter run, hit the 40-point mark for the
first time as a member of the Heat and the 48th time in his career. His strong
play helped the Heat overcome the loss of guard Dwyane Wade, as the club
captured their season-high fifth straight win.
Wade left the game in the third quarter with a mild sprained left ankle and
did not return. He didn’t register a point for the first time in his NBA
career, playing just 18 minutes.
Rasual Butler came off the bench to score 16 points and grab seven boards for
Miami, which has won three straight versus Washington this season and seven in
a row versus the club dating back to last year. These two teams will meet
again in Washington on Wednesday.
O’Neal is the first Heat player to reach the 40-point mark since Alonzo
Mourning did it on February 23, 2000 versus New Jersey.
It was the third meeting of the season between the two teams. The Heat were
victorious in the previous two contests, as they picked up a win on the road
and at home. The Wizards and Heat will meet for the final time during the
regular season on Wednesday at the MCI Center. Overall in this series, the
Heat have won seven straight and eight of the last 11 contests.
