Raptors place Mourning on IL
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) – The Toronto Raptors Monday placed newly
acquired center Alonzo Mourning on the injured list with a knee injury.
Mourning was obtained by the Raptors earlier this month from New Jersey in a
trade involving All-Star guard Vince Carter. However, Mourning has not
reported to Toronto and may never play a game for the Raptors.
The NBA veteran expressed his desire to join a title contender, and Toronto
will likely buy out his contract.
Mourning, 34, underwent a kidney transplant in 2003 and didn’t have to pass a
physical for the December 17 trade to go through.
A seven-time All-Star and three-time NBA defensive player of the year,
Mourning averaged 10.4 points and 7.1 rebounds in 18 games with New Jersey
Mourning has averaged 19.8 points and 9.6 rebounds in 652 career games with
the Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat and New Jersey.
In other news, the Raptors activated center Rafael Araujo from the injured
list. Araujo missed five games with a lower back strain. Araujo, the eighth
overall pick in this year’s draft, has averaged 1.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and
in 11 games this season.
