Pierce and McGrady named NBA Players of the Week
New York, NY (Sports Network) – Boston Celtics guard Paul Pierce and
Houston Rockets guard Tracy McGrady were named NBA Eastern and Western
Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, January
31 through Sunday, February 6.
Pierce averaged 25 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists per game and became one
of only three players this season to record a triple-double by the end of the
third quarter. In a 110-89 win over New Jersey on February 2, Pierce
registered 29 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists for his second triple-double
of the season. The Celtics (24-24) finished the week 3-1 and as of February 7
sit atop the Atlantic Division.
McGrady, meanwhile, led the Rockets to a 4-0 record with wins over Boston,
Philadelphia, Minnesota, and the LA Lakers. He averaged 27.7 points, 6.0
rebounds and 6.0 assists per contest and was named a starter to the Western
Conference All-Star team on Thursday.
McGrady highlighted his week with a 40-point performance in a 119-113 victory
over Minnesota on Friday. The 6-8 guard also pulled down 13 rebounds and
dished out four assists in the win.
Other nominees for Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were
Dallas’ Erick Dampier, Denver’s Kenyon Martin, Detroit’s Tayshaun Prince,
Miami’s Shaquille O’Neal, New Jersey’s Vince Carter and Jason Kidd, Phoenix’s
Amare Stoudemire, Portland’s Damon Stoudamire, Sacramento’s Mike Bibby and
Toronto’s Chris Bosh.
