Hamblen to guide Lakers for remainder of the season
El Segundo, CA (Sports Network) – The Los Angeles Lakers announced Thursday
that Frank Hamblen will continue as the head coach of the club for the
remainder of the season.
Hamblen assumed the coaching chores on February 2 after Rudy Tomjanovich
announced his resignation and has posted just a 2-5 record.
Tomjanovich said the decision was based on his health, although it was not
related to the bladder cancer that forced him to take a medical leave of
absence as coach of the Houston Rockets during the 2002-03 season.
Hamblen took over on an interim basis, while Tomjanovich stayed with the
organization as a consultant.
In other news, Kurt Rambis and Brian Shaw were named assistant coaches for the
rest of the campaign.
Rambis was as an assistant on Phil Jackson’s staff for three seasons and prior
to that, worked in the team’s front office from 1999-2001. He also served as
an assistant coach under Del Harris for three seasons (1994-1997), before
being named interim head coach of the Lakers 12 games into the 1998-99
Shaw is in his sixth season with the team.
