(Sports Network) – The Nets couldn’t tame the East-leading Miami Heat on
Thursday, as they fell 106-90 at Continental Airlines Arena.
Vince Carter paced the Nets with 27 points. Ron Mercer came off the bench to
score 12, while Nenad Krstic contributed 11 in the loss. Carter posted his
17th consecutive 20-point game, three short of his career best (23).
Miami also welcomed center Alonzo Mourning, who was signed by the club on
Tuesday. However, the veteran only saw two minutes in garbage time against his
former team. Mourning, a seven-time All-Star, played 12 games for the Nets in
2003-04 and 18 this season before being traded to Toronto.
Jason Kidd ended with 10 points for New Jersey, which shot just 37.5 percent
from the field. The Nets were just 7-of-21 (.333) from three-point range and
23-of-31 (.742) from the free throw line.
Although the Nets committed just seven turnovers, they were dominated on the
glass, 47-31, by the Heat.
Nets F Brian Scalabrine returned to the court after being activated from the
injured list. Scalabrine, who underwent minor knee surgery, posted two points
in six minutes of action.
New Jersey currently sits in the middle of the Atlantic Division, 4 1/2 games
behind first place Boston and two back of Philadelphia. The Nets are 10th in
the East playoff race.
The Nets have a day off now before finishing their week against the Orlando
Magic at home. New Jersey won’t play again after that until beginning a four-
game road trip in San Antonio on Tuesday.
