Memphis Grizzlies 2005 Draft Preview
(Sports Network) – Memphis needs help up front. The Grizzlies were once
again swept in the first round of the postseason, as they fell in four
straight to Phoenix this year and were eliminated by San Antonio, 4-0, in last
The Grizzlies need to get stronger and more physical in their frontcourt. Pau
Gasol is their best player. The 7-0 Gasol, who is not a physical player,
averaged 17.8 points and 7.3 rebounds in 56 games during the 2004-05 regular
Gasol does have a decent supporting cast that consists of guards Mike Miller,
James Posey, Bonzi Wells and Jason Williams. Forwards Shane Battier, Stromile
Swift and Lorenzen Wright are solid up front. However the club could lose
Swift to free agency and may opt to allow Wells out of his contract.
Williams, who led the club in assists (5.9 apg), is a nice point guard, while
Miller is a deadly outside shooter. The 6-8 Battier, who averaged 9.9 points
per game, can play multiple positions.
Memphis owns the 19th pick in the draft. The Grizzlies have many needs and
will go for the best available player with their first-round pick.
