Seattle, WA (Sports Network) – The Seattle SuperSonics have re-signed center
Vitaly Potapenko. Terms of the deal for the nine-year veteran were not
Potapenko played in just 33 games last season for the Sonics, missing the
first six weeks of the season with a fractured bone in his right hand. He
averaged 3.5 points and 2.4 rebounds during the regular season, then chipped
in 2.0 points and 1.4 rebounds in five playoff games.
“In his three years with the Sonics, Vitaly has given us a tough, physical
presence in the middle along with the ability to score,” said Sonics general
manager Rick Sund. “We’re excited Vitaly will be in a Sonics uniform again
because he also gives us solid veteran experience.”
Potapenko started 39 of the 65 games he played during the 2003-04 season, when
he averaged 7.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.
In 574 career NBA games with Cleveland, Boston and Seattle, the 6-foot-10
native of the Ukraine has averaged 6.8 points and 4.6 rebounds. The Cavaliers
selected him with the 12th overall pick of the 1996 draft.
