Miller Time: Grizzlies’ guard nets 30 in win over Wizards

Washington, DC (Sports Network) – Mike Miller scored a season-high 30 points
to lead Memphis to a 93-82 victory over Washington at the MCI Center.

“My teammates did a good job setting screens and finding me after I made a few
shots,” Miller said. “Anytime they do that and you are shooting well, it makes
the game a lot easier. When you get it going like that, the basket seems a lot
bigger.”

Eddie Jones and Pau Gasol posted 13 points apiece and Lorenzen Wright added 11
as the Grizzlies stopped a season-long four-game losing streak. Bobby Jackson
helped pace the Memphis offense with eight points and nine assists.

“Bobby Jackson is known for shooting the ball from the outside, so you have
to stay in front of him; but then he passes the ball off to Pau Gasol and
Gasol is able to score from the inside,” Washington guard Gilbert Arenas said.

Antawn Jamison led Washington with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Arenas
scored 24 points and Caron Butler added 16 in the loss, just the Wizards’
second in seven games. Brendan Haywood controlled the boards with 10 rebounds.

Washington shot out early with a 27-19 first-quarter lead. The Grizzlies went
on a 10-1 run, however, capped by a three-pointer by Miller with 1:46 left
before halftime. His 19 first-half points helped bring Memphis from an 11-
point deficit at the 4:25 mark to a 41-41 tie when Hakim Warrick hit a free
throw with 1:16 remaining.

The Grizzlies overtook the lead at 56-55 with 5:51 left in the third quarter
when Jackson dished a wraparound pass to Wright for a two-handed jam.
Following three more lead changes, Miller regained the Grizzlies’ lead for
good, 62-61, on a three-pointer with 3:11 left in the third quarter. The shot
was part of a 16-3 Memphis run snapped by a triple by Arenas 1:10 into the
fourth quarter.

Warrick pivoted his way into a turnaround jumper in the lane with 3:51 left in
regulation, and acquired Memphis’s largest lead of the game at 88-76, thus
sealing the win for the Grizzlies.

Memphis is 11-9 on the road this season. The Grizzlies will visit the Miami
Heat on Tuesday at AmericanAirlines Arena in the finale of the current swing.

The Wizards are 11-9 at the MCI Center this season. The Wizards had won three
in a row at home before the Grizzlies’ arrival.

“We lost to a very good team, a very well-coached team, and a team that has a
lot of dangerous pieces,” Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. “We did the best we
could, but we got a little disorganized and distracted on the offensive end.
For the most part we really defended well.”
