Bryant, Billups honored as top players for January
New York, NY (Sports Network) – Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant and
Detroit Pistons guard Chauncey Billups have been selected as the NBA’s top
players for January.
Bryant garnered the Western Conference honor with an incredible month that
included an 81-point performance on January 22 against Toronto. He averaged
43.4 points during January for the eighth-highest monthly scoring average in
league history. Wilt Chamberlain holds the top seven.
In addition to the second-highest scoring output in NBA history, Bryant also
had four straight games of 45 or more points in early January to join
Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor as the only players to record at least 45 points
in four consecutive games.
Billups’ stats seem tame in comparison, but he earned the Eastern Conference
award after averaging 20.5 points, 8.7 assists and 3.5 rebounds for Detroit.
The Pistons were 13-2 during the month, including a stretch of 11 straight
