Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) – LeBron James’ driving layup with 18.1
seconds left helped the Cleveland Cavaliers hold on for an 89-86 win over the
Milwaukee Bucks at Quicken Loans Arena.
James finished with 22 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds for Cleveland,
which blew a 10-point lead with under four minutes remaining, but rallied to
win for the eighth time in 10 games.
Drew Gooden and Aleksandar Pavlovic added 15 points apiece for the Cavs, who
scored just four points in the final 3:58.
Bobby Simmons had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bucks, who have
dropped three of their last four outings. Michael Redd had 18 points and
sparked a late surge that gave Milwaukee a brief lead.
Down 85-75 with just under four minutes left, Redd took over for the Bucks.
Redd scored seven points during an 11-0 surge that gave Milwaukee the lead.
After Redd drained a three-pointer to draw the Bucks within 85-84, Milwaukee’s
defense forced a Cleveland turnover with 44 seconds left.
On the ensuing possession, Zydrunas Ilgauskas forced a jump ball when he
stuffed Milwaukee’s Jamaal Magloire on a layup attempt with 40 seconds to go,
but the Bucks gained control after the jump and called a timeout.
Coming out of the timeout, T.J. Ford found himself with the ball, drove to the
lane and nailed a fade away jumper with 30.4 seconds remaining to give
Milwaukee its first lead since the second quarter, 86-85.
On Cleveland’s next possession, James had the ball and drove to the rim,
hitting a layup to give the Cavs an 87-86 edge.
“I knew I had to be aggressive,” said James regarding his play.
Anderson Varejao then drew a charge on Redd seven seconds later to give the
ball back to Cleveland.
“I think the call was made in their favor,” said Redd of the charge.
“Personally, I think it should have been nothing. That’s my opinion.”
James found Donyell Marshall under the rim for a dunk on the next possession
to extend the lead to 89-86 with 9.7 seconds remaining.
Charlie Bell missed two free throws with three seconds left, Cleveland got the
rebound and ran out the clock.
Ford finished with 12 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds for Milwaukee,
which has dropped three of four to the Cavs this season.
Ilgauskas ended with 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocks for the Cavs,
who captured the season series from Milwaukee for the first time since the
Leading 44-37 going into halftime, The Cavs went ahead by as many as 12 points
in the third. After a Redd bucket cut the Bucks’ deficit to 48-43 less than
two minutes into the half, Cleveland ran off seven straight points to grab the
Pavlovic tallied the first five points of the surge, which was capped by an
Ilgauskas bucket 4:10 into the stanza for a 55-43 cushion.
Milwaukee later ended the third by tallying 15 of the final 21 points to cut a
60-48 deficit to 66-63 going into the fourth. Simmons had eight of the 16
points for the Bucks.
The Cavs scored the first six points of the fourth to extend to a 72-63 lead.
The cushion reached 10 points, 79-69, when Ilgauskas connected on a basket
with four minutes elapsed.
Cleveland improved to 18-6 at home this year…Milwaukee fell to 10-14 on the
road…The Bucks’ last five road losses have come by a combined 13
points…Redd started the game missing his first six shots…Varejao drew
three charges in the game.
