Brand’s 44 leads the Clippers past Memphis

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) – Elton Brand matched a career-high with 44
points and pulled down nine rebounds as the Los Angeles Clippers rallied to
defeat the Memphis Grizzlies, 91-87, at the Staples Center.

Center Chris Kaman added 16 points and 11 boards while Cuttino Mobley had
eight points for the Clippers, who have won five of their last six and 10 of

Pau Gasol and Shane Battier each netted 16 points for Memphis, which has lost
five in a row and seven of its last eight overall. Jake Tsakalidis posted a
double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

Los Angeles trailed by eight after three quarters and was behind for most of
the game, but clawed back in the final 12 minutes and ultimately went in

The Clippers assumed their first lead of the second half with 3:19 left in the
contest, as Kaman converted a layup attempt to make it 83-82.

Then, after Memphis was denied on its ensuing possession, Brand moved into the
lane and hit a one-handed shot to put L.A. up by three.

It remained close down the stretch but Brand helped put things away with 23
ticks left on the clock, coolly draining a baseline jumper to put the Clippers
up 89-85.

“We had the hot hand in (Brand) and we just rode it,” said head coach Mike

Cassell then netted both of his free throw attempts after Gasol’s dunk on the
other end to seal it.

Memphis committed just two turnovers and shot 48 percent from the floor in the
first half en route to a 54-45 advantage. Battier had all 16 of his points in
the first 24 minutes while Bobby Jackson scored 11 of his 12 points in that

The Grizzlies owned a slim 27-26 lead after one quarter of play.

This Clippers win snapped a four-game home losing streak to Memphis….The
last time that Brand scored 44 was his rookie season versus
Washington…Memphis finished 38.5 percent from the field…Gasol also had
nine rebounds…The Grizzlies have lost six in a row on the road.
