Webber wonderful as Sixers down Grizzlies in Memphis
Memphis, TN (Sports Network) – Chris Webber turned in a huge all-around game
as Philadelphia downed the Memphis Grizzlies, 94-91, at FedEx Forum.
Webber scored 31 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out nine assists and
blocked two shots, the second coming in the dying seconds to preserve the win
for the Sixers, who snapped a three-game skid.
Allen Iverson scored 18 points, but left the game in the second quarter with
an ankle injury. Steven Hunter scored 13 points and snatched nine boards and
Andre Iguodala also tallied 13 points in the win.
Jake Tsakalidis scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Pau Gasol and
Mike Miller both scored 16 points for the Grizzlies, who have now lost three
of their last four games.
With 1:19 remaining, the Sixers took a 89-87 lead on a layup from Iguodala.
Gasol answered with a layup of his own to tie the game back up, but Webber
broke the deadlock as he sank a jumper with 47 seconds left.
Following a John Salmons free-throw, Gasol threw down a dunk to cut the lead
to one, 92-91, with 15 seconds left. Kyle Korver then converted 1-of-2 free
throws for a two-point Sixers’ lead.
With under 10 seconds to go, Gasol had a chance to tie the game, but his shot
was rejected by Webber and Iguodala corralled the ball to seal the win.
Iverson’s layup with 3:18 to play in the first quarter capped a 6-0 spurt for
the Sixers and gave them an eight-point lead at 21-13. Philadelphia led by
nine, 26-17, at the end of the quarter as Iverson dropped in 12 points.
The Sixers took a 10-point lead early in second quarter as Salmons banked home
a jumper. However the lead would later shrink down to two, 31-29, as the
Grizzlies scored six straight points on a jumper from Damon Jones and four
points from Miller.
The Sixers held a 50-44 lead at the break.
A pair of Eddie Jones free throws gave the Grizzlies a 55-54 lead with 8:53
remaining in the third quarter. They would later extend that margin to eight,
70-62, on a Miller dunk and led 73-70 heading into the final stanza.
