Jones leads Grizzlies over Clippers
Memphis, TN (Sports Network) – Eddie Jones scored 23 points to lead the
Memphis Grizzlies to a 95-85 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers at the
Mike Miller put in 21 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, Pau Gasol had 15
points and 12 boards and Lorenzen Wright and Chucky Atkins each scored 11 in
the win for the Grizzlies, who have won five straight and trail the Clippers
by 1/2 game for the fifth spot in the Western Conference.
Elton Brand had 25 points and 11 rebounds and Sam Cassell added 21 points for
the Clippers, who have dropped their last two games.
The first quarter was tight through the first half of the stanza, but a 7-0
run by the Grizzlies enabled them to take a 26-18 lead into the second
Memphis led by as many as 14 points in the second quarter after Shane Battier
put in a jumper to make it 34-20 with 8:06 left. But, Los Angeles closed out
the half with a 16-9 run with Brand putting in a free throw to complete a
three-point play with 26 seconds left and trailed 43-36 going into the locker
The Clippers pulled to within five points, 51-46, after Brand drove the lane
and put the ball in with 6:54 left in the third. But, the Grizzlies countered
with nine straight points and took a 65-55 lead into the final 12 minutes.
Los Angeles scored 10 straight points and after Shaun Livingston hit back-to–
back jumpers, with the last coming with 3:35 to play, the team was trailing
That was as close as the Clippers got, though, as Miller and Jones countered
with back-to-back three-pointers and the Clippers never managed to get closer
than six points behind for the rest of the game.
The Clippers host Washington on Saturday…The Grizzlies travel to New York
for a game against the Knicks on Friday…Memphis has won two straight and
three of the last four against the Clippers…Los Angeles shot 45.3 percent
while Memphis connected on 44.6 percent of its shots…The Clippers just
barely edged the Grizzlies on the boards, 43-42.
