Spain, Argentina advance at World Basketball Championships

Saitama, Japan (Sports Network) – Pau Gasol netted a game-high 25 points to
lead Spain past Lithuania, 89-67, and into the medal round at the World
Basketball Championships.

Spain’s opponent on Friday will be Argentina, which blew by Turkey 83-58. Both
Spain and Argentina have now won all seven games they have played thus far in
the World Basketball Championships.

Gasol, of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies, hit on a blistering 8-of-14 from inside
the arc while nailing 9-of-12 from the line.

Juan-Carlos Navarro added 22 points while hitting four three-point attempts
for Spain, which outscored Lithuania 28-11 in the opening quarter to establish
momentum early.

Darjus Lavrinovic paced Lithuania with 17 points while Linas Kleiza added 15.

However, Lithuania had trouble keeping up with its Spanish counterparts. Spain
went to the free throw line almost 20 more times than Lithuania (28-9) while
forcing 28 turnovers.

Spain also corralled 17 steals while leading by as many as 27 points.

Meanwhile, Andres Nocioni of the Chicago Bulls dropped 21 points to pace
Argentina over Turkey.

Carlos Delfino added 14 points and the San Antonio Spurs’ Manu Ginobili had
seven points in 16 minutes as Argentina built a 75-40 advantage after three
quarters before sending its starters to the bench.

Leading by nine points after the opening frame, Argentina outscored its
opposition 18-7 in the second and 32-17 in the third.

Cenk Akyol led Turkey with 11 points while Serkan Erdogan was the only other
player in double figures with 10.

The loss by Turkey was only its second of the event with its other defeat
coming at the hands of the still undefeated Greece.
