Big blow in game for the gold: Spain will play without Gasol
Saitama, Japan (Sports Network) – Spain will battle Greece for the gold medal
at the world championships Sunday without its star player, as Pau Gasol will
miss the game with a left foot injury.
Gasol racked up 19 points and 11 rebounds during Spain’s 75-74 semifinal
victory over Argentina.
“Tests have confirmed that the player suffers from a partial fracture of his
fifth metatarsal in his left foot and will miss the final,” said a statement
from the Spanish Basketball Federation.
The Memphis Grizzlies star openly showed the importance of the tournament when
being helped off the floor late in the semifinal victory, crying with his
younger brother Marc Gasol.
“I will try to be with my teammates for whatever they need, but what really
hurts me is not to be able to be on the court physically in order to help as I
have done in the past in this tournament,” Pau Gasol said. “I hope that
against Greece we will play a great game.”
