Nets waive Jay Williams
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) – The New Jersey Nets waived guard Jay
Williams, the team announced on Sunday.
Williams, who was signed on September 28, was averaging 3.8 points in five
preseason games with the Nets.
Williams was originally selected by the Chicago Bulls as the second overall
pick in the 2002 NBA Draft. During his rookie campaign he averaged 9.5 points,
4.7 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.15 steals in 75 games during the 2002-2003
season and was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie second team.
Following the season, Williams was involved in a motorcycle accident, in which
he sustained a fractured pelvis and three torn knee ligaments in addition to
severing a main nerve in his leg. He has not appeared in an NBA game since
The 6-foot-2 Williams played three seasons at Duke (’00-’02) and helped lead
the Blue Devils to the NCAA men’s basketball championship in 2001.
