Johnson, Yao named NBA players of the week
New York, NY (Sports Network) – Joe Johnson of the Atlanta Hawks and Yao
Ming of the Houston Rockets were named the NBA’s top players for the week
ending November 12.
Johnson, who ended the week as the league’s second leading scorer, captured
the Eastern Conference honor after averaging 29 points and 8.7 rebounds in
three games for the Hawks. He also became the first player in Atlanta’s
history to score at least 25 points in six straight games to open a season.
Yao averaged 29 points and 11.3 rebounds in four victories for the Rockets to
garner the Western Conference award. He also shot an impressive .557 from the
floor. Yao also recorded two double-doubles and was the Rockets leading scorer
in three of their four games.
Other nominees for the awards were Denver’s Carmelo Anthony, Golden State’s
Baron Davis, Indiana’s Al Harrington, the Los Angeles Clippers’ Sam Cassell,
Miami’s Dwyane Wade, Milwaukee’s Michael Redd, Portland’s Zach Randolph,
Sacramento’s Kevin Martin, San Antonio’s Tony Parker and Carlos Boozer and
Deron Williams of Utah.
