Short-handed Clippers top SuperSonics

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) – Elton Brand notched 18 points, nine
rebounds and seven assists, as the Los Angeles Clippers made it three wins in
a row with a 96-91 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics at the Staples Center.

Corey Maggette also scored 18 points for LA, which played the finale of a
five-game homestand. Sam Cassell scored 16 points and Tim Thomas added 13 for
the Clippers, who went 3-2 on the stand. The Clippers are 20-10 as the host
this season.

Rashard Lewis scored 21 points for Seattle, which has lost three of four. Ray
Allen and Earl Watson both netted 19 points. Chris Wilcox netted 13 points,
and Nick Collison added 12 rebounds for the SuperSonics, who are just 6-22 on
the road this season and have dropped three in a row as the visitor.

With Seattle trailing 91-89, Allen cut through the lane for a layup with 46.1
seconds left. Maggette then got fouled and converted both free throws for a
93-91 Clippers lead with 27.6 seconds remaining.

On the ensuing possession, Watson overthrew a pass intended for Collison out-
of-bounds, and Chris Kaman next converted two free throws for a two-possession
game, 95-91, with 10.9 seconds on the clock.

Lewis air-balled a three-point attempt, and Cuttino Mobley’s free throw with
1.2 seconds left sealed the win for LA.

“We did a nice job defensively in the fourth quarter,” LA coach Mike Dunleavy
said. “We blocked shots and made big plays at the defensive end. We played
soft in the third, but were locked in the fourth.”

LA jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, and carried a 26-19 margin into the second
quarter. Seattle cut its halftime deficit to single digits, 51-43, on Wilcox’s
layup at the buzzer.

The Sonics used the momentum to open the second half on a 10-3 spurt sparked
by Lewis’ runner 23 seconds into the third quarter, to trail 54-53 with just
under 10 minutes to go.

Seattle put together another run, 10-2, ignited by Luke Ridnour’s layup midway
through the stanza for a 69-67 lead with 3:25 remaining, and led 75-74 heading
into the fourth.

“We need to play for a full 48 minutes, not just the fourth quarter,” Brand
said. “We know the importance of each win, with teams fighting for the
playoffs.”

Game Notes

The Clippers played their first game since Shaun Livingston tore three left-
knee ligaments and a dislocated kneecap…Cassell strained his right groin
late in the fourth. He finished the game, but is questionable for Thursday’s
tilt…This was the first of a home-and-home set between the clubs. The
SuperSonics will host the Clippers on Thursday at KeyArena…This was
also the third meeting of the campaign between the squads. The teams
split the first two contests…Seattle had a modest two-game winning streak
snapped after losing its last three at the Clippers.
