Gary Payton to Sign with Golden State Warriors?

Just in time for the new year: old faces.

The most veteran of the veteran free agents are about to get the wake-up calls they left for 2008, the perfect time to initiate the perfect plan of missing a rigorous training camp and the first couple months of the regular season before riding to the rescue on rested legs.

Chris Webber sort of did it last season, joining the Pistons in January and helping spark a second-half rally to the best record in the East, although the part about resting was actually the 76ers benching him in fourth quarters, before C-Webb negotiated a buyout from Philly. This time, he has been officially inactive.

P.J. Brown, Gary Payton, Dale Davis and Webber are all teetering somewhere between joining a playoff drive or retiring, depending on the teams that call, their specific needs and their place in the standings.
