George Karl and Greg Popovich Fighting Over Manu Ginobili?
The hours leading up to the Spurs’ game Friday against the Nuggets brought a disagreement between the head coaches regarding Manu Ginobili. The Spurs’ Gregg Popovich swore Ginobili would not play, preferring to keep the off-guard’s injured finger out of harm’s way. Denver’s George Karl, sensing some gamesmanship on the part of Popovich, swore that Ginobili would.
‘Pop’s pretty honest, but he can try to trick up the game,’ Karl said. ‘Ginobili makes every shot he takes in this building. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the court.’ Turns out Popovich really wasn’t playing possum. Ginobili sat out his fourth consecutive game since spraining the index finger on his shooting hand on Dec. 22.
You can’t say Popovich didn’t try to forewarn Karl of Ginobili’s impending absence. True to his word, he really wasn’t playing a shell game with his guard.’I wouldn’t do that,’ Popovich said. ‘I wouldn’t want George to spend all day working up something to defend him for nothing.’
