Don Nelson One and Done in the Golden State?
The Warriors want coach Don Nelson back for another season. They’ll have to wait until some time this summer to see if the feeling is mutual. With 20 games left on the schedule, the Warriors exercised the team option on Nelson’s contract for the 2008-09 season, the team announced Tuesday. He’ll make $5.1 million for a second straight year if he accepts, per the renegotiated contract he signed in September. Nelson said he’ll have to get back to the team after the season ends.
He wants to discuss it with his wife, Joy, team captains Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson, the rest of the team and some friends. It’s always nice to be wanted, especially when you’re 67,’ Nelson said. ‘I’m going to have to think about that one. Joy and I will decide that, after we’ve had time to reflect and rest a little bit.’ Nelson was surprised the Warriors moved so quickly to pick up the third and final year of his contract. He shouldn’t be. Since Nelson rejoined the organization last season, the Warriors are 81-63 in regular-season games and they stunned the top-seeded Mavericks in last season’s Western Conference playoffs.
