Did Referee Call Vince Carter ‘boy’?
One of the first things on the NBA’s 2009 agenda likely will be investigating whether a game official used inappropriate language during a confrontation with Vince Carter on Wednesday.
Carter was ejected in the second quarter of the Nets’ 83-75 loss to the Pistons in Auburn Hills after official Derrick Stafford whistled him for two technical fouls. Carter originally was upset that Stafford had given the ball back to Detroit after he blocked an inbounds pass by Allen Iverson beneath the Pistons’ basket.
Carter thought the ball hit off of Iverson before landing out of bounds. However, accounts of the incident in the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press said Carter appeared to accuse Stafford of calling him "boy," a term that is considered offensive to African-Americans. Like Carter, Stafford is African-American.
