Stephon Marbury Signs with Chinese Club Shanxi
What a long, strange trip it’s been for Starbury. The Coney Island native briefly popped up in Boston last year before promptly disappearing and, save for a few bizarre videblogs, staying lost to the world. His latest movements may seem the most surprising yet as it was announced today that Stephon Marbury has signed with Shanxi of the Chinese Basketball Association.
"The aim of signing Marbury is to pay back our fans and try to win more games in the rest of the season" – Wang Xingjiang.
Shanxi, you may remember, is the club that previously signed Bonzi Wells to a contract with the same motivation. Wells, who reportedly earned $50,000 a month to suit up for the squad, had his contract terminated in February of last year-not even two months after inking the deal-when he failed to return to the team on time after leaving the country for a vacation.
Stephon Marbury, meanwhile, won’t be earning nearly as much as Bonzi, instead taking a reduced salary in exchange for the opportunity to endorse his Starbury clothing line in a country with a billion-plus residents. It may prove a smart decision if it helps him shift his products in China, or it may turn out to be a typically nutty move by Marbury. Either way, I’m probably not the only one looking forward to seeing what happens.
