On Wednesday, the T-Wolves announced the signing of Josh Howard.
HoopsVibe Very Quick Call: Man, the T-Wolves are hurtin'.
My last memory, (and maybe his too) of Howard being relevant to any sort of basketball conversation was his misguided attempt at explaining how much weed NBA players (ie him) consume.
"NBA players d smoke marijuana," said Howard in his famous 2008 interview. "Smoking weed in the off-season sometimes is my personal choice and personal opinion…I don’t think that’s stopping me from doing my job. I think that everybody in the media world and in the sports world knows that NBA players do smoke marijuana."
Since Howard made those public statements, his career has gone up in smoke. In the roughly three years since that quote, Howard has played in a total of 96 games starting just 40 of those contests and played for three different NBA teams. He has shot under 40% from the field (38.6% over the last two years)and seems to have lost a step. Other than that, all weed jokes aside, Howard is viewed as a malcontent, selfish, "me first" player. And now that his physical skills have deteriorated, he found himself on the free agent scrap heap.
But the T-Wolves have gotten so thin so fast they kicked the tires on Howard and signed him to a one year deal believed to be for the veterans minimum. Ricky Rubio is still rehabbing his knee, Chase Budinger tore his meniscus, Brandon Roy has zero meniscus between two knees, JJ Barea, Kevin Love, Nikola Pekovic and almost everyone else who is a swing-man is hurt and missing time due to injury.
Like Howard says with weed and the Wolves say about knee ligaments, "smoke 'em if you got 'em!"
