Hoopsvibe is sad to report that Scott Ashley Sterling, son of Los Angeles Clippers owner, Donald Sterling, has died.
Hoopsvibe's quick call: We send our thoughts and prayers to the Sterling family.
Sterling was found dead of an apparent drug overdose in his Malibu home, authorities confirmed Wednesday. He was 32 years old.
Dispatchers found Sterling shortly after 11:30 P.M. Tuesday night when they were sent out to his Malibu home to check up on him. A friend of Sterling's called dispatch after not hearing from him for several days. Paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene.
"Sheriff's homicide and Los Angeles County coroner's personnel at this time believe that Sterling died of an apparent drug overdose," a statement said. As of now, Sterling's death has been said to be accidental, but an autopsy will determine the exact cause.
It hasn't always been easy for Scott and the Sterling family. In 1999, Scott Sterling was arrested for shooting a friend in the leg at the Sterling residence. Beverly Hills police said Sterling shot the man while he was running away. Sterling claimed he fired the shot in self defense as the man came at him with a knife. Criminal charges were never filed due to "credibility problems with the victim" and the case eventually fizzled out.
The Clippers are currently one of the NBA's best teams. Their 25 wins so far this season has them tied with the Spurs for most in the league. Unfortunately, their 17-game win streak ended last night, the same night of Scott Sterling's death, in a 92-78 loss to the Denver Nuggets.
The Clippers go up against Golden State tonight. But there are more important things in life than basketball, and our condolences go out to the Sterling family during this difficult time.
