Trade Rumor: Grizzlies To Deal Rudy Gay.
Memphis Grizzlies are rumored to be exploring options for trading Rudy Gay.
HoopsVibe's Very Quick Call: I have no idea why the Grizzlies would want to mess with their team's lineup and chemistry in the midst of a solid 20 - 10 season.
The word around the NBA is that the Memphis Grizzlies have been putting out feelers for what they can get for small forward Rudy Gay. They just signed Gay to an $84 million contract in 2010 that has him earning $16.4 million this season, but apparently aren't happy with his 18 PPG, 5.9 RPG, and 2.6 APG. Not sure what they think they can get for Gay, but he's seen as an established scorer in the league.
The real reason the Grizzlies are looking to deal Gay may have less to do with his production and more to do with changes in their own front office. The Grizzlies front office recently added John Hollinger and Jason Levien, while Chris Wallace's level of influence on personnel decisions is unclear. I guess Hollinger and Levien think they know what's best, but they might have to learn the hard way that messing with a team's chemistry and threatening to deal a guy dropping 18 PPG might not be the best idea for success.
The only thing that makes sense is they might be trying to get out from under his contract. If the Grizzlies are able to trade Gay they will have to figure out how to fill his offensive void. Gay not only gets 188 PPG, but he is also capable of creating his own shot. This is a highly valued skill in the NBA a lot of teams are willing to pay for.
