Dennis Rodman put on probation – Fun facts about “The Worm”

Former NBA rebounding extroardinaire Dennis Rodman was placed on probation today for failing to pay $500,000 in child support to his ex-wife.

Hoopsvibe’s quick call:  The former NBA "bad boy" seems to be living up to his reputation off the court as well.

Rodman was found in contempt of court this week and has been ordered to pay the $500,000 he owes in back child support to his ex-wife, Michelle Rodman.  Michelle and Dennis married in 1999, Michelle then filed for divorce in 2004, however, the marriage officially dissolved in 2012 when Michelle petitioned the court to grant the divorce.  The couple have a son, D.J., and a daughter, Trinity.

While it was first stated that Rodman owed north of $850,000 in child support, the couple met outside of court and agreed to the $500,000; of which Rodman has yet to pay.

According to Rodman’s attorneys, Rodman was not present at a 2009 hearing where he was ordered to pay nor was he properly served the court documents outlining his responsibilities, which is the reason he underpaid in the first place.  Rodman’s lawyer, Linnea Willis, said, "He’s been complying with the court orders ever since he found out the correct information."

Rodman’s attorneys are currently seeking to get the $500,000 order to pay overturned.

This isn’t the first time Rodman has been in trouble with the law.  In 1999, Rodman and then wife, Carmen Electra, were both charged with misdemeanors after a domestic disturbance complaint.  Later that same year, Rodman was arrested for drunken driving and driving without a valid license.  In 2003, he was arrested and charged with domestic violence at his home in Newport Beach, California, the same home where he would throw "ragers" frequently, resulting in over 70 appearances from city police.  Rodman was arrested again in 2004 for drunken driving and again in 2008 for another domestic violence incident.

Rodman hasn’t kept the most low-key profile since leaving the NBA but then again, Rodman was never a low-key kind of guy.

But aside from his off the court issues, Dennis Rodman was an amazing basketball player and a favorite of many, including myself, for the way he played the game.  He was known for his defensive and rebounding acumen, his controversial antics, his ever-changing dyed hair, and numerous piercings and tattoos.  He is consistently regarded as the best rebounding forward in NBA history.

And here are a few other interesting facts about Dennis Keith Rodman:

-He was nicknamed "The Worm" because of his intense defense and rebounding ablities

-He made the NBA All Defensive 1st Team seven times

-He’s a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year

-He led the NBA in rebounds per game for seven consecutive years (NBA record)

-He has five NBA championship rings

-He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011

-In the 1991-92 NBA season, he averaged 18.7 rebounds per game; he had 1,530 rebounds in total (that was the most ever recorded since Wilt Chamberlain’s 1,572 rebounds in the ’71-’72 season) and that number has yet to be surpassed since.

-He has been an actor and a professional wrestler

-He dated Madonna and was married to Carmen Electra

-He is listed at 6 feet 6 inches tall and is the shortest and only player since 1973 to average over 13 rebounds per game over a career

-He has stated that he is the oldest of a total of 47 children

Rodman’s basketball accomplishments are impressive; his personal accomplishments, not so much.  Regardless, if there’s one thing to admire about the guy, it’s the fact that he’s never cared what people think of him.

"I just took the chance to be my own man," Rodman said.  "Most people around the country, or around the world, are basically working people who want to be free, who want to be themselves.  They look at me and see someone trying to do that … I’m the guy who’s showing people, hey, it’s all right to be different."

There’s certainly something to be said for that.  As long as you’re not breaking the law in the process.
