Indiana Pacers win, New Orleans Hornets lose four-team, five player trade

Four NBA teams have agreed to a five-player trade that will send Trevor Ariza to the New Orlean Hornets and Darren Collison to the Indiana Pacers, two league sources said. In the proposed deal, the Houston Rockets will send Ariza to the Hornets, who in turn will send Collison and James Posey to the Pacers. The Pacers will send Troy Murphy to the New Jersey Nets. And the Nets will send Courtney Lee to the Rockets. Link HoopsVibe’s Very Quick Call: Four teams with different agendas have connected for an end of summer trade to address their needs before the 2011 season begins. The winner in this blockbuster is the Indiana Pacers. While they gave up Murphy’s expiring contract and took back an over-the-hill/overpaid Posey, they also got a budding table-setter in Collison. The second year point guard is lightning quick and excelled when starting for the injured Paul. Look for Collison to star in Indiana next to Danny Granger, Roy Hibbert, and Lance Stephenson. By swapping Ariza for Lee, the Houston Rockets gain cap relief. This summer, the Rockets spent $87 million to re-sign Luis Scola and Kyle Lowry, while also adding Brad Miller. Ariza, the Rockets' prize free agent signing of 2009, became expendable after the deadline day acquisition of Kevin Martin from the Sacramento Kings. Murphy will provide depth and experience to a young New Jersey Nets frontcourt. Best of all, his deal comes off the books at year’s end, which makes him an attractive trading chip. The loser in this trade has to be the New Orleans Hornets. Yes, Ariza is a fine player. And yes, today they’re a marginally better team. With this trade, the organization seems to think they have a shot at re-signing Paul. Let’s be real: they have zero shot. None. Add up small market New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina, the oil spill in the Gulf Coast, and owner George Shinn’s thriftiness and the club can’t generate enough revenue to sign a star-studded supporting cast for Paul. I know this. You know this. Paul knows this. He’s gone when his contract expires at the end of 2012. There’s no chance of an extension. Two summers from now, Paul will walk on the Hornets like Kaiser Soze walked on the police station in The Usual Suspects. Unlike the finish of this classic flick, there will be no suspense or surprise when CP3 leaves. We know what’s coming. This is expected. Like Lindsay Lohan going to jail. Like the sun rising. Or, in my case being from Vancouver, like the rain falling. So why not trade Paul and rebuild around Collison? After all, Ariza, while a fine player, won’t appease Paul. He wants LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Miami. He wants Amar’e Stoudemire and (possibly) Carmelo Anthony in New York. He doesn't want New Orleans. In fact, he won’t re-up with the Hornets regardless of who they sign or trade for. Rather than face reality, Hornets management is delusional, aiming to please the snooty super model girlfriend (Paul) who is bidding her time until she can break up with them. Instead of waiting for the inevitable, the club should trade Paul while his market value is relatively high, get back draft picks, expiring contracts, and blue-chip prospects, and make Collison the starter. It seems New Orleans’ blunder is Indiana’s victory. --Oly Sandor. Got thoughts? Well, get at HoopsVibe News in the comment box below.

Report: Neighbors say Lorenzen Wright’s ex-wife ‘needed money’

It was a common site in this posh enclave: Sherra Wright, walking down Whisperwood Drive, shouting into her cell phone and making demands for money. "It was really bizarre," Patricia Coleman told the Daily News Thursday night. Coleman's home abuts Wright's house in this quiet suburb of Shelby County, 20 miles east of Memphis. "She wouldn't talk in the house," Coleman said. "She would walk up and down the street and scream and holler. Neighbors would call and ask what's going on? She was always saying she needed money. That's one of the reasons we're concerned today." Link

Lamar Odom’s length gives Suns fits, Lakers win game one

"Even on a balky knee, Kobe Bryant had no problem giving the Los Angeles Lakers an early leg up in the Western Conference finals.

Bryant scored 40 points, Lamar Odom added 19 points and 19 rebounds, and the Lakers opened the series with ruthless offensive efficiency in a 128-107 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Monday night.

Pau Gasol had 21 points for the top-seeded Lakers, who won their seventh straight playoff game and snapped the Suns' six-game streak with a phenomenal second half highlighted by Bryant's 21-point third quarter.

The defending NBA champions beat the third-seeded Suns at their own uptempo game when necessary, fluidly running the court to set up baskets for Bryant in his sixth straight 30-point game. Bryant then rested his sore knee for most of the fourth quarter in the 11th 40-point game of his playoff career."

HoopsVibe’s Call: The headlines, news stories, and highlights will give most of the credit to Kobe Bryant, who tallied 40 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists in the L.A. Lakers’ game one win over the Phoenix Suns.

Fair enough. Bryant, however, wasn’t the difference maker. Lamar Odom’s length was.

The ultra versatile forward dropped an impressive 19 points and 19 rebounds, using his lanky frame to give the Phoenix Suns fits.

For instance, during one sequence in the second half, Mr. Khloe Kardashian grabbed two impressive offensive rebounds before drawing a goaltending charge against Amar’e Stoudemire.

Odom’s fine play propelled the purple-and-gold to the NBA championship last season. And the Lakers are a different team when their chubby cheeked reality star brings his A-game.

How important was Odom to the Lakers winning game one against the Suns ? Get at HoopsVibe News with thoughts in the comment box below.

Judge Orders Siohvaughn Wade to Jail

Bad went to worse for Siohvaughn Wade when Dwyane started seeing Gabrielle Union, and today things just got even worserer. After failing to show in court this morning for the ongoing custody case between her and estranged husband Dwyane, Judge Marya Nega gave her until the afternoon to either appear or face time in jail. Guess what: She never materialized. When the deadline came and went and she remained a no-show, the judge followed through on her threat and ordered the Cook County Sheriff's Department to take Siohvaughn Wade into custody.

Shimmy Fans, Rejoice: Antoine Walker Attempting NBA Comeback

I'm a simple creature, and as such it doesn't take a whole lot to keep me content. With the weather warming up, then, and the NBA playoffs in full swing, I was already a fairly happy chappy. This morning, though, things just got a whole lot better.

After reading a number of vague reports that 'Toine was mulling a comeback, ESPN today reported that Employee Number 8 was indeed bringing his four-point-shooting ass back to the league. If the league will have him, that is. Here's the information we have right now:

[vid] Basketball Wives: Evelyn Lozada Plans Her 34th Birthday; Royce Reed an Issue Again

After an interesting opening episode, I was wondering what mischief the women of VH1's Basketball Wives would find themselves in for the second show. Well, in the clip below the action turns to the preparations for Evelyn Lozada's 34th birthday party, which doubles as an independence party acknowledging the end of her ten-year relationship with Antoine Walker. Shaq to Kids: Tell Shaunie’s New Boyfriend I’ll Kill Him

Shaunie O'Neal, producer of VH1's Basketball Wives (see pictures of the ladies here) and ex-wife of Shaquille O'Neal, apparently isn't getting along so well with the big fella.  Diesel was already mad that Shaunie was snapped with her new boyfriend Marlon Yates, and the television series prompted him to seek an injunction halting its production.  The basis for that legal maneuver was a "non-disparagement" clause in Shaunie and Shaq's divorce agreement which prohibits either of the former couple making negative comments about the other. The problems are still piling up for Allen Iverson.  After splitting from the Philadelphia 76ers and divorcing wife Tawanna Iverson, you couldn't blame AI for acting a little out of character.  Reports hit the gossip pages suggesting that Iverson had something of a drinking problem and that his gambling behavior had resulted in his being banned from several casinos.  The purchase of a $4.5 million house seemed to confirm the split from Tawanna, and since then we've heard very little from the former NBA MVP.
