Is Marc Gasol for Real? By Chase Kuech

Last winter, when Memphis traded Los Angeles Pau Gasol, everyone on earth, including me, thought it was one of the most lopsided trades in history. Now, after a hot olympics and a good start to this season, it may be time to rethink the value of the other Gasol. So far this season, Marc is averaging a double-double, 13 points and 10.3 rebounds per game in an even 30 minutes a game so far in the first 4 games. He is shooting over 54% from the field, and a decent 70% from the free throw line. He’s got a PER of 20.2 to start his career and boasted a huge statistical game against Golden State with 27 points, 16 rebounds and 3 blocks on 9-11 from the field and 9-11 from the line. Granted it was against a fast paced and undersized Warrior team, but still a strong performance.
Pau has better career statistics at the moment than Marc, but they also come at a much higher price. Pau will be making over $15 Million this season while Marc is only making a little over 3. Marc is also 4 years younger and out of the bright lights of Los Angeles. His expectations are low and he is playing with a lot of young talent. If Pau ever starts to struggle, it will be widely criticized and probably difficult to deal with, while Marc is generally under the radar and won’t have to face as much scrutiny.
Yes, Marc may not ever turn into the type of player his brother is, one who warrants getting a $15 Million dollar contract to play in a big city and make his team into a title contender, but he should at least start getting some credit for being a decent rookie. If he can average a double-double during his rookie season, he should be in the talks for rookie of the year. It won’t happen if Rose keeps scoring so well, as we saw with Horford and Durant last year, but Gasol should at least be considered this year. He appears to be the real deal, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he and the other young Memphis players surprise some people this year. Not only other teams, but media and critics as well. Marc Gasol is not the worthless trade dump everyone thought he was the beginning of this year.
