NBA TV Sucks!

  By John Nguyen
09.18.2008 - Updated on 09.18.2008

If anyone had DirecTV during the early 2000s, NBA TV used to be on channel 720. It’s currently on 601. NBA TV back then used to be good showing old school forgotten NBA commercials, classic games, NBA Video, and Rucker Park shootouts. Those were the golden days of the NBA channel when it had zip and energy coming out the gates with freshness.

Today, it’s stale. At this moment, I’m watching yet another incessant rerun of “Road to Redemption" and "I Am a Celtic." Earlier, there were old tired ass men sitting on coffee tables reminiscing about the good ol’ days. Is it the lack of ideas or laziness in programming? I know that the NBA is sitting on a massive video library reserve and they barely show any of the games; it’s every now and then. It’s sad. Do they realize their demographic? Its guys like me who feasts on nostalgia. The channel is forgettable, which is why the producers should really take a look at the NFL channel and their presentation.

When the NBA season gets closer to opening night, they usually step it up. Then when the season is in full swing, they show too much NBA TV Daily. It gets stupid annoying. Stop this already. I find better shit on YouTube. Enthusiasts put together well thought out mixes such as Vince Carter’s top 100 dunks, tons of crossover mixes, Jason Williams’ best dishes, Josh Smith’s top blocks, and Michael Jordan’s memorable games (thanks to Hoopsencyclopedia and SPMJ) Please subscribe to their channels. It’s fuckin’ sick.

Anyway, the higher ups really need to revamp that channel because they lost the edge. I appreciate some of the biographies and the NBA Fit show, which they should really do more. I’m pretty sure a lot of people are intrigued to see how these guys work out. Each of them has different routines and different struggles. Wouldn’t you want to see how Eddy Curry does his thing (or lack thereof) or how Josh Howard smokes weed? I’m extremely interested if Birdman Chris Andersen ever finished his dunk in Denver. I really fuckin’ do. I dig the NBA fantasy show though; smart thing. Rick Kamla and Mike Yam are awesome.

For some reason NBA TV has become more and more of a history channel, which is fine. There’s nothing wrong with that, but when they routinely talk about these things instead actually showing the highlights or the entire game itself then we have major problems. The channel is too squeaky clean as well, which makes things very stagnant; just simply too much PR. Please take note of how TNT does things.

And on that note, NBA TV during the summer is complete trash. It’s just as good as reality television. If I was in charge of the channel, I would bring it up to code. That shit is completely unacceptable factoring in the money I’m paying. Yes, I’m mad. Please stop with the talking heads. Too much talking. Not enough dazzling highlights set to awesome rap music.

I really agree with you, John Nguyen, because during my Middle and early-High School days, I would be so enthusiastic to watch NBATV in Digital Cable, even seeing some old-school NBA Inside Stuff episodes, old NBA games, etc. so I would be informed of how great the NBA was before I had to put up with that nonsense that ESPN/ABC attempts to brainwash people of my generation. Also, I’ve noticed by watching the games how challenging Michael Jordan had to play against these tough defenses, as well as other players such as Bird, Dr. J, Magic and others. I wish NBATV would do things like that again, but I doubt it would happen anytime soon...\1 .

My point was you view sucks. Thinking you know how to run a TV network. You were the one talking about major outlets, and like a said you’d take it if you were offered. Me personally I am don’t like the media that’s only reason I come on these is to mess with people like you. I think you are all full of sh*t, who think you know sports, but don’t. So I wouldn’t take any media job if I was offered. It’s funny how bloggers like you try to front about how independent you are, but the moment you’re offered a paid gig, you play the company card. But anyway, you don’t even get paid, and you don’t know anything close to hoops, look at the crap you have written, it’s garbage. You’re so lame you can’t even put a picture up, because you don’t want your face to be shown to th world too see what a dumbazz writer looks like. Peace out 2-minute man, opps I mean lastminute man @gmail.com .

I Second That

That does seem kind of true, about what the person below stated. .

That’s because the writers have nothing else to do, but to sit around forming pointless views, and waiting to respond back, losers. I can tell you don’t get paid for this sh*t. So you probably flips burgers to .

To "Yeah I Said It." Glad you’re reading the article and thanks for responding. I have not once thought about a gig at NBA TV, but you would probably do it huh? Aren’t you a fan, a lurker of blogs too? Last time I checked you don’t need sources to form an opinion. You need sources when you’re stating a fact. Check again. This was an opinion piece. Glad you’re reading it though. Thanks, bro. .

One more thing, as for the "erasing comments because it disses them. They can’t deal with it" is flat out wrong. Alot of people criticize the writers here and we’re not censors. What are we? Korea? This is America, buddy. Hoopsvibe is probably the only place where you can comment AND the writer responds back. Oh yeah, Chiqo. I know they show 4-5 games a week but those games are the same games they’ve been showing..already conveniently edited from past workers. They’re famous games, too. I know what happens in alot of those games. Show other games not so famous, but memorable. For instance, they don’t show games such as MJ messing up a rookie Jerry Stackhouse in 1996 or Hakeem Olajuwon getting his quadruple double. .

John Nguyen ,the wanna be TV executive and basketball writer LOL! That is why you write for HoopsVibe, and don’t have an important job like running NBA TV, or a real gig like ESPN.com. You know that if you had the opportunity to be apart of those outlets you’d jump at the chance, and you’d play the company role as well. So stop frontin. You a blogger, a fan, not a credible source. So you and your fellow writers and rant all you want, you have no influence. And lucky to even be writing and have 10 readers an article, pussy. .

NBA TV sucks in general. They can easily show Allen Iverson’s rookie games where he gunned for 40+ points, Kobe games where he went on stretches for 40-50 points, MJ’s three consecutive games where he went for 50+ points. I mean, they can repackage the games and call it "Allen Iverson’s Marathon," "Penny Hardaway’s Marathon..." something to that nature. But nope, the people up there lack the creativity to do so DURING THE SUMMER when no one cares about the WNBA. We just wanna see more NBA basketball somehow even through old games. If you think the article is shitty, then I advise not to read it. It’s opinion and every writer will get bashed on no matter what. We’re not here to satisfy to your tastes. I speak for all the writers here. We’re not here to make you happy. If you want squeaky clean PR, go read ESPN or NBA.com or whoever your writer is. This is for real hardcore NBA fans who are tired of reading fluff pieces. If you don’t like that, go write your own articles. With that said, NBA TV has been complete s---for the past 2-3 years. It’s about time someone put them on notice to raise their level. I know they can do better. And this is from a real die-hard fan. Not alot of females watch NBA TV so there’s no need to show alot of WNBA. Show the games, but the other stuff can be shown late at night. Oh yeah. You suck. Deal. .

I agree, with the person below me. You know HoopsVibe is known to erase comments that diss them, becuase they can’t accept it. So expect out our stuff be erased even though it’s true. Which shows how wack they really are. Don’t hate on us because you need to step your game up .

Nice job on all the cursing in the article. Learn to articulate without simply trying to sound cool. Then again, real journalism probably eludes you. .

if they team up with turner and get the rights to all of the old games they have on file, that would be the greatest thing ever. in the meantime, nbatv serves its purpose. it could certainly be better, but it’s not terrible. and they do show four or five games per week. not a bad deal. .

They’re also going through a massive changeover to Turner Broadcasting (TNT). So no new productions were approved. There’s been a complete turnover of the staff and everything is being relaunched for the start of the season. So that should explain some of it. It’s not known how much TNT’s Inside the NBA will be involved, but they have said Kenny, Charles, and Ernie will be involved in some capacity. So there’s a reason to chill out. Also, they should show more D-League. Just sayin. .

what, you expect them to cover the wnba? i agree their coverage this summer has sucked, but overall, they’re a quality station. you gotta have content to cover in order to show programming and it just doesn’t exist in the offseason. .
