Stillwater, OK (Basketball News) - Brad Buckman scored a career-high tying 28 points to lead Texas to a 74-73 win over eighth-ranked Oklahoma State at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Buckman, who missed a pair of free throws late and committed what could’ve been a costly foul with less than a second remaining, shot 8-of-11 from the field as the Longhorns (20-9, 9-7 Big 12) arguably played their way into the NCAA Tournament with the win.
Kenny Taylor added 11 points for Texas, which ended its regular season 2-2 in its last four games and halted the country’s longest home winning streak at 29 games.
Joey Graham led Oklahoma State (21-6, 11-5) with 17 points. JamesOn Curry added 16 points and John Lucas had 13 for the Cowboys, who head into the Big 12 Tournament dropping three of their last four.
OSU last lost at home on February 24, 2003, against Texas Tech.
With Texas holding a 66-61 lead, Lucas drained a three-pointer with 2:27 remaining to draw the Cowboys within two.
Buckman answered on the other end, however, hitting a short turnaround jumper with just under two minutes on the clock. Lucas then missed a jumper with 1:25 remaining and Jason Klotz pulled down the board and was fouled.
Klotz hit 1-of-2 from the line to make it a 69-64 contest.
Curry then committed a traveling violation, leaving the door open for the Longhorns to extend the lead even further. But Daniel Gibson hit just 1 of 2 from the line after being fouled and OSU continued to have life, down six points 70-64 with 47 seconds left.
Ivan McFarlin hit a putback layup three seconds later to draw the Cowboys within four. Then Buckman hit only 1-of-2 from the line for a five-point lead.
Lucas followed that with a layup to get OSU to 71-68 with 25 seconds on the clock and McFarlin then fouled Taylor seven seconds later.
Taylor also hit only 1-of-2, but Buckman got the offensive rebound and was fouled by McFarlin.
Buckman, however, missed both attempts from the line and Terrence Crawford drained a three-pointer at the other end to Make it a 72-71 contest with five seconds left.
Freshman Daniel Gibson was fouled on the inbounds by Lucas and became the first Longhorn player to hit both free throws in over four minutes to extend the lead to three with 3.1 second left.
The game appeared to be secured with those free throws, but Buckman fouled Crawford at midcourt when he was attempting a last-second shot to give the Cowboy three free throws with three-tenth of a second left..
Crawford hit the first, but missed the second, forcing him to try and intentionally miss the third and get a tip in for the tie. Crawford, unfortunately, hit the final free throw and the game was over.
Texas, which led 33-32 at halftime, swept the season series from OSU.
