Washington, DC (Basketball News) - Gilbert Arenas scored 25 points and sank 4- of-8 three-point shots to lead Washington to a 106-95 win over Cleveland at the MCI Center.
Larry Hughes contributed 22 points and eight rebounds, while Etan Thomas netted a career-high 18 points and added 10 rebounds for the Wizards, who won their second straight. Kwame Brown chipped in 15 points and 10 boards in the win.
LeBron James delivered 28 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Cavaliers, who were looking for their first three-game winning streak of the season. Cleveland lost for the 28th straight time on the road. Chris Mihm and Ricky Davis both posted 13 points in the loss.
Arenas sparked a 20-2 spurt at the end of the second quarter to help Washington erase an 18-15 deficit. He had seven points and Brendan Haywood added six to help give the team a 35-20 lead.
Washington built a 46-27 advantage on a dunk by Thomas with 6:38 left in the second quarter.
However, the Cavaliers pulled within 54-49 at halftime. Two baskets and a foul shot by Zydrunas Ilgauskas in the final 1:19 of the second capped the late surge.
The Wizards, who controlled the initial minutes of the third quarter, opened a 66-56 lead on a dunk by Jarvis Hayes with 7:37 remaining.
Cleveland responded with a 7-0 run. Kevin Ollie posted the final three points to get the Cavaliers within 73-70 with 48 seconds remaining in the third.
A driving layup by Arenas 14 seconds later put Washington ahead 75-70 at the end of the third.
James’ three-pointer 16 seconds into the fourth quarter got the Cavaliers within 75-73.
But Cleveland got no closer, as the Wizards scored six of the next eight points to secure their seventh win in the last eight meetings against the Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers opened a 10-4 lead less than three minutes into the game, then had a 16-10 edge on a driving layup by James with 6:17 to go in the first quarter.
