Majerus resigns from USC job

Los Angeles, CA (Basketball News) - As anticipated, Rick Majerus, who was introduced last week as the head basketball coach at Southern California, has resigned.

Majerus cited health issues as the reason for his change of mind. He reportedly had been working full force since accepting the USC job and had already experienced physical discomfort. He was slated to officially take over as coach on April 1, but his past heart problems and an ongoing battle to control his weight prevented him from continuing.

"I made a mistake," Majerus said Monday. "I apologize to USC for any inconvenience or embarrassment."

The 56-year-old Majerus spent 15 seasons as the head man at Utah, but resigned in January 2004 because of heart problems. During his tenure, he compiled a 308-90 mark, while making 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament and one appearance in the national championship game in 1998.

He has also coached at Marquette and Ball State, compiling a career mark of 407-142 in 19 years.

The USC job was vacant after the school fired Henry Bibby on December 6, just four games into the season. Bibby left the Trojans with a 131-111 overall record. He was in his ninth year as their head coach after spending one season as an assistant with the school.

Assistant Jim Saia has been serving as interim head coach of the Trojans (4-3) since Bibby’s firing.
