Five Reasons the L.A. Lakers Will Win the West

  By Jason Kelly
02.26.2008 - Updated on 02.26.2008

When the Lakers pulled off a trade in which they sent the Memphis Grizzlies a cup of coffee, a ball of twine and a panda bear (Kwame Brown has “hands like feet”), Bluntman told me that this was the trade that would put the Lakers over the top. Only having seen a few of Memphis’ games over the last few years and still believing that the return of Andrew Bynum was the key to the Lakers’ season, I told him it was a good trade but not a blockbuster deal (although when you consider the “addition by subtraction” of Kwame Brown, it was a huge net gain).

Last Friday, while we waited at Seamus McCaffrey’s for the Boston Celtics game, he told me he was right about the trade – which I must begrudgingly admit he was – and he gave me five reasons (because, earlier in the season, I gave 5 reasons why the Lakers were horrible) why the Lakers would win the West. He dared me to counter his points. Let’s see how it goes.

1.They have the greatest player on the planet.
I’ll even go a step further. Acquiring Shaquille O’Neal will probably make Kobe Bryant even better if the Suns meet the Lakers in the playoffs. Bryant’s hatred for O’Neal will sustain Kobe in much the same way that Anakin Skywalker’s hatred for Obi-Wan Kenobi kept him alive long enough for the Emperor to save him and turn him into Darth Vader. Darth Kobe, if you will.

2.Andrew Bynum’s return will give the Lakers the biggest front line on the planet.
True, but I don’t see him getting back to full effectiveness in time. It may not matter, though, only making next year much more frightening for Laker-Haters.

The Lakers are deeper, but where is the interior defense going to come from? It’s not coming from Gasol, and there is not a superior post presence without Bynum. The Lakers will have to out-score opponents without a reliance on defense. It’s very possible given the roster, but has not proven effective in the playoffs in a long time.

3.They have the greatest coach on the planet.
The thing on this one is that Jackson will never get a fair shake, having always won championships with the greatest players of all time. He hasn’t been able to do much over the last couple of seasons with Bryant, though. I suppose, though, that the Bryant-Gasol combo has less star-power than the Jordan-Pippen and Bryant-O’Neal combinations. So, he will have a chance to do a little more coaching than usual during this post-season.

4.Derek Fisher never misses a shot.
I’m not so sure I’d go that far, but he doesn’t really take bad shots and when he’s forced to shoot he is pretty clutch. He’s effective on this team because he cannot be left open, but he cannot create for himself or his teammates. If the opposing team is able to keep the ball in his hands, they’ll be in good shape.

Which leads to …

5.Kobe will be able to play through the pain.
If he’s not able to, this team is sunk. More than the pain, what if it gets worse? His hand will not heal, and if he’s not able to lead the team on offense, nobody else can do it. That’s no different than any other team that would lose its star and leader, but this is a problem waiting to happen.

Funny how the season rests on a pinkie finger.

i agree with the guy below me. sasha though, is on fire and he could keep up the great work! phil doesnt caall time out because it makes his team feel like hes getting them out of a jam. he lets them play on and figure out the problem. i dont think kb24’s hand has swollen up at all. gary vitti is making sure of that. yeah radmonovich is unreliable when it comes to staying healthy, but wait until everyone else returns! u gotta watch out already and just wait when ariza and bynum return! .

So on second thought, here’s my list:1) Kobe 2) Gasol+Bynum 3) Lakers Bench 4) Team Play (they are 37 and 5 when they score 100+... they average 107ppg) 5) They are playing with injuryies (Ariza, Mihm, and Bynum haven’t been part of their recent success). There it is. .

I’m not even going to comment on the spurs since this story ISN’T ABOUT THEM. I have a couple of problems with the article.I gotta say, I’m a die hard lakers fan, but there are only 2 sure things on this list of 5, and that aint great. Kobe IS the greatest, and Bynum+Gasol DOES = huge. But, Derek fisher is human and misses shots, in fact he misses most of them (he’s shooting 46%). Phil is not the greatest coach on the planet (for god’s sake call a time out when your team is sucking it). And finally, can Kobe play through the pain? Sure, but the question is: will the hand swell up beyond what is reasonable?I think the lakers can win it all, but it’s a long way off and this list doesn’t do anything to convince me. .

ok michael, ill show u how its done. it will be the lakerz year this year. yeah, horry has 7 rings, but umm didnt 3 out of 7 come from l.a.? 2 with houston, and 2 with the spurs. injuries are no excuse. kb24 is playing with an injury on his shooting hand as i speak! we will not blame any failures on this. spurs were eliminated by the lakerz in ’04 after we had injuries all year long with malone and shaq out as well as kobe. people say we need shaq 2 win. lies. they say he won a ring on his own. yeah he had dwayne wade on his team and shaq wasnt the star. plus they played on the EAST! can it be any easier than that? spurs a dynasty? ummm didnt they lose to the heat in the finals??? =) .

as much as i hate the spurs... i still think they are the NBA’s Best team... but i think this season! is kobe’s season, he is playing like a MVP... and all those people that say kobe is a ball hog, dosnt pass! go and watch a lakers game! now t-mac is a ball hog takes bad shots and lebron need to learn how to shot! cavs making the finals last yr was the biggest fluke in NBA history!... every one knows thats Spurs-Pistons Finals would have been more competative! .

you losers are a bunch of morons! derrr! the spurs are old, derr! the spurs are scared, derrr! the fakers are a dynasty derrr! hey morons! the spurs didn’t blow up the salary cap even more to compete with tim duncan, by the way you morons duncan is 31, manu 30 and parker 25 you morons! and dynasty!!! your fakers missed the playoffs a couple of years ago...the spurs are the nba’s most winningest franchise in nba history and the most winningist sports franchise the past 10 plus years...and the reason the spurs haven’t repeated is becuase in 2000 and 2004 tim tore a knee and in 2006 his plantar fascia...but look who i’m trying to explain this to two morons with a collective iq of 1/2! if you morons are going to make a comment try and make an adult effort like bluntman not like some moronic fakers fan j.m you loser! .

MICHAEL aka Michelle Espinoza sounds like a frightened little cwy-baby! boo-hoo-hoo! His san antonio turds will go yet another year without the ability to repeat. HAHAHA. I can see why Turd fans and Turd coach greg poopoovich are crying. Sorry but the lakers are a true dynasty and have rebuilt to once again take the throne they’ve held for so many years. See you (eliminated) in the playoffs pal! .

As long as Kobe’s finger is okay enough to play through minimal pain, he will continue to be the best player on the planet. As long as Bynum comes back healthy, their defense will be fine. Bynum can alter enough shots with his length and size just as much as Shaq and he is a good rebounder...also Gasol’s length and athleticism is underrated on the defensive end. Fisher is an underrated acquisition because he brings leadership and experience as well. They also have a strong bench that can nail the 3’s and bring toughness. I know there are a couple of "ifs", but this team is without doubt the scariest in the West. .

i can give you five + reasons the fakers won’t win the west...tim duncan, kurt thomas, bruce bowen, ime udoka and manu ginobili...that will be the best defensive five players the overhyped fakers will face if they can make it passed the suns or wavs...the fakers DON’T have bench depth and are all young kids with NO playoff experience...heck robert horry has as many championship rings as all of the fakers combined...lets not forget that kobe hasn’t been able to win anything without shaq...defense wins championships not espn and fakers bandwagon support. .
