If Coach D’Antoni is Right, Then Why Can’t the Phoenix Suns Beat the San Antonio Spurs?

  By Jason Kelly
04.25.2008 - Updated on 04.25.2008

When Bluntman and I were walking to our pre-game dinner and beer at Seamus McCaffrey’s, he noticed something. “Your Shaq jersey is fading,” he said, “I hope it’s not an omen.” As we were leaving the arena, I took it off and began flailing it around. Walking away, I composed myself just in time to notice a homeless beggar. He now owns my Purple People Eater jersey. It will do him more good than me.

To be fair, Shaq has met or exceeded most expectations. He’s done just about everything tangible he was supposed to do on the court. He’s yet to deliver on those intangibles, though.

Can he, though, with this squad? With this coach?

Mike D’Antoni has been running his mouth off that the Suns are the better team and that they will “bust up” the Sp*rs sooner or later. I’m not mathemologist or anything, but I do remember Logic 101.

If the Suns have the better players, but keep losing, they must be worse at something else. Hmmm … the weakness on the Suns? What could it be?

I wonder what the locker room looked like at halftime tonight.

“Guys, don’t worry, we’re the better team. We’ll win.”

“Coach, how should we defend the pick-and-roll that’s been killing us for two and a half games?”

“Well, try harder. Play with more energy. And, by all means, try to hit more shots.”

While I tried to be modest in my last post, admitting that Coach D probably knows more about the Xs and Os of basketball, I have to wonder why he pulled Leandro Barbosa in the fourth when LB was the only guy hitting shots. Why wasn’t Steve Nash in more of the fourth? Really.  Losing Game 3 is bad, coach. Were you resting them for Sunday?

The only solace that we have is that this series could lead to the firing of Mike D’Antoni. Bluntman sent a text message to his buddy (who shall now be forever known as “Chronic” – Bluntman’s sidekick), saying that Coach will surely be fired now. Chronic responded, “Kerr should have fired him at halftime.” Truer words may never have been spoken.

Except these words: After The Big Acquisition, Bluntman told me that the Suns would be a six seed, get bumped in the first round and Mike D’Antoni would get fired. So far, it looks like he’s two out of three. Of course, he also said that if the Suns could keep it to 12 turnovers or less, the Suns were a lock for the title (they had 9 tonight).

One last note in my stream of consciousness rambling:

On the radio, I heard a voice of discontent from the locker room. Amare Stoudemire lauded the Sp*rs’ offensive efficiency saying that they make the most of each possession and get good looks; they do not, paraphrasing his words, try to get up any old shot in the first few seconds.

Must be rough to be a PHX fan, J. That said, even as a Laker fan, I wanted to see this team beat San Antonio. Man, that was ugly—they couldn’t stop Tony Parker from doin ANYTHING. There’s no way D’Antoni or Kerr are being fired. The results of the Shaq experiment wont be final until the end of next season. They are gonna have to trade for some better defenders though. Ouch. .

In game 3, the Suns played D like a high school team. Shaq got caught on the pick and roll switch trying to guard Parker 20 feet from the basket so many times that I lost count. The most fundamental defensive mistake you can make. In the 4th quarter, up by 15, Oberto missed one defensive assignment and Popovich called a timeout and yelled at him, genuinely angry. He didn’t make the mistake a second time. .

I think when people look back ten years from now at this supposed "rivalry" between the Spurs and Suns they will wonder what the big controversy was. The spurs won more regular season head to head games in the last five years and every single playoff series, and at least four championships so far while the Suns have won zero. The Suns are simply the poster children that prove the old adage that defense wins championships. Suns’ fans still don’t want to admit this is true. If razzle dazzle offense won titles, the And1 streetballers would be the NBA champs and the Globetrotters would be runners-up. .

Earlier this yr, Kelly you wrote an article comparing the Suns to the Celtics, saying the Celtics will flame out like the Suns always have. I commented that the Suns are nothing like the Celtics or other great playoff teams, because they don’t play defense. All I can say now is— I told you so. Suns and offensive minded teams like Golden State and Denver are entertaining in the regular season and can skate by. But come the playoffs, the teams that have real players, players that play on both ends of the floor (not Nash by the way), rise to the top. Hope Suns fans watched the Laker game today and learned what a real playoff team looks like, but then they probably already know that by watching the Spurs. The Suns are a joke. How can you say San Antonio sucks by the way? I guess your definition of "sucks" are teams that win NBA championships, and the teams that don’t suck are the ones that have never won any. .

the spurs are a dynasty and they will prove that with another championship this year. The Sun’s talk alot but the fact is Steve can’t guard Parker and him and Duncan can play pick and roll all day. So i’d be prepared to get the brooms out. .

It might not be as much as D’Antoni’s fault as much as it is Popovich for being a far superior coach. He pretty much out coaches every other coach in the league. His players backed it up by playing probably their best game of the year also. .

I agree with "the real professor", thanks "the Professor", we don’t care about what sites you go to. Anyway, yeah D’Antoni might be out as coach especially since Steve Kerr is there now as GM, but who realistically can they get that can do a better job. I agree there needs to be change, but who? .
